Grammatical Gender in English

English once had grammatical gender, but is unique among European languages in abandoning the grammatical gender system entirely. An interesting analysis of this is found in “Defining Creole” (by John H. McWhorter) which can be previewed at: books.google.com/books?id=FoCLqMPN8vAC.
